Auction
and heifer sale buyers,
sponsors and volunteers honored by Stanislaus County
Fair
Turlock-It
takes more than 566 livestock entries at an auction
and sale to raise more than $620,000. It takes more
than an auctioneer, too!
The third vital
component of a successful auction and sale is buyers!
And those buyers were honored by the Stanislaus County
Fair board and staff on Monday evening, October 28.
More than 150 buyers
from the Stanislaus County Fair’s Annual Junior
Livestock Auction and Replacement Heifer Sale
attended the Annual Buyers Appreciation Dinner
on Monday, October 28, 2002, at the Turlock Turf Club.
“The auction and
the sale are the culmination of months and months of
work by hundreds of FFA and 4-H members who exhibit at
the fair,” shared Tony Leo, chief executive officer
of the Stanislaus County Fair. “They work hard
year-round to garner a place in the sale and auction
and without the buyers the sale and auction would be
uneventful.”
“Many of the
exhibitors use the proceeds from the auction and sale
to fund their next FFA or 4-H project,” shared Leo.
Leo and the
Stanislaus County Fair Board believe that you can
never say thank you enough. And the annual Buyer’s
Appreciation Dinner is just one of the many ways to
thank the auction and sale buyers.
Bob Conway, owner of
Valley Harvest Nut in Modesto, is one of the hundreds
of buyers who attend the auction year after year.
Conway shared that he goes to the auction every year
to support the kids, just as buyers did when his
children showed at the fair in the 1970’s. “My
kids are now having kids, so that’s how long it’s
been since they were exhibitors at the fair,” joked
Conway. “But I attend the auction almost every year
to help out with kids’ projects, just like buyers
did for my kids long ago.”
Conway is just one of
the hundreds of buyers who exemplify the spirit of the
sale and auction. “Most of the buyers who attend
the event are not necessarily there to make an
investment, but instead attend to support the FFA and
4-H programs,” shared Leo. “It is that spirit of
generosity that we honor at the annual appreciation
dinner.”
The
2002 Stanislaus County Fair Replacement Heifer Sale
featured 108 animals and grossed more than $250,000.
The average price paid for a heifer in this year’s
sale was $2,300.
Sponsors
of the auction and sale were also recognized: American
Ag Credit; Avila Spreading Service; Doug Brinkley;
Central Ag Products; Chaparral Manufacturing; County
Bank; F&M Bank; Foster Farms; Pepsi; Wahl,
Willemse & Imfeld; Wilkey Sheet Metal, Inc; and

men: Leroy Bettencourt; Wayne Boggs; Merline Carlson;
Chuck Cozzitorto; Russel Felch; Doug Galloway; Eddie
Gibbs; Larry Gremp; Steve Hagland; Melvin Lemos; David

for meat goats was $5.75 per pound!
The
mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a
family and community oriented experience promoting
agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.
The 2003 fair is slated for July 25 through August 3-“The
Place to be in 2003!”
