Stanislaus
County Fair announces two nights of destruction derby
fun!
It’s the only event that sold out faster
than the 2002 Stanislaus County Fair’s Lynyrd
Skynyrd concert—it’s the fair’s Destruction
Derby.
In response to popular demand the Stanislaus County Fair and the Turlock
Lions Club will present two nights of Destruction
Derby fun, instead of just one, during the 10-day run
of the 2003 fair. Destruction Derby
I—Traditional Turmoil
will be held on Wednesday,
July 30, 2003.
Destruction
Derby II--Metal Mayhem will be held on
Thursday, July
31, 2003.
Sponsored by the Turlock Lions Club, the
Destruction Derby (D-Derby) has been an ever-popular
event at the Stanislaus County Fair for 29 years.
“The traditional D-Derby is so popular that
reserved seating tickets for the derby sold out in
less than one hour in 2002, and in less than four
hours in 2001,” said Tony Leo, chief executive
officer of the Stanislaus County Fair.
“Two nights of D-Derby make it possible for
more fair guests to enjoy the fun!’
D-Derby
I--Traditional Turmoil will continue to consist of three preliminary
rounds and one consolation round of American-made
cars. Drivers are judged simply on the number of hits
made to other vehicles. Competitors are limited to
residents of the 38th District Agricultural
Association only (all of Stanislaus County and a small
portion of Merced County).
The top five competitors go on to the main
event where they compete for cash prizes and trophies.
In 2002, more than 65 drivers participated in
the event.
New to the 2003 Stanislaus County Fair will
be D-Derby II--Metal Mayhem. The second night
of derby competition will feature four new heats which
will be open to competitors from within and outside
the 38th District Agriculture Association.
New
heats planned for D-Derby II--Metal Mayhem, subject to minimum
participation, are:
- Compact Cars:
Domestic and imports under a 102” wheel
base
- Late Models: American-made,
full-sized cars made after 1980
- Powder Puff:
Women drivers only—any year and size car
(except compacts)
- Pick-Ups: Full size pick-up
trucks
- Last Chance:
An opportunity for previous years’
Turlock Lions derby survivor vehicles and
for the survivors the 2003 D-Derby I and 2003
D-Derby II
“The Turlock Lions club is calling all
cars,” said Carl Mikkelsen, Turlock Lions derby
coordinator. “A
full plate of destruction is planned for everyone who
has an appetite for real life bumper
cars—competitors and spectators alike!”
Drivers interested in participating in D-Derby
I--Traditional Turmoil or D-Derby II—Metal
Mayhem should contact Mikkelsen at 667-5452
(evenings) or e-mail Lionsderby@aol.com.
Official entry forms will be available in late
April, 2003.
Tickets
will go on sale for the derbies beginning Saturday,
May 3, and can be purchased at the Stanislaus County Fair office, 900 N.
Broadway, Turlock, or by mail. For a tickets-by-mail
order form and details, call the fair office at (209)
668-1333. Derby tickets will not be
available via the internet or the telephone, as they
were in past years.
Tickets for D-Derby I are $10 reserved
seats, $8 adult general admission and $6 child general
admission. Tickets
for D-Derby II are $8 reserved seating, $6 adult
general admission and $4 child general admission.
General admission tickets will go on sale on the day
of each derby at the fair.
Fair admission prices are not included in
the price of the derby ticket.
The
Stanislaus County Fair is now in its 92nd year.
The 2003
fair opens Friday, July 25 for a 10-day run.
The theme of this year’s fair is “The Place
to be in 2003.”
Last year, more than 226,000 family members
enjoyed the fair as attendance topped 226,000
visitors—the largest attendance in the past decade.
The
mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a
family and community oriented experience promoting
agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.
