Turlock
fairgrounds is home to new open-air market
The Stanislaus County Fair has a new
tenant—actually more than 100 new tenants! Joe Gomes
and more than 100 vendors will call the fairgrounds in
Turlock their home twice a week at a new open-air
market.
“Joe’s Open-Air Market at the Fairgrounds” will kick
off on Saturday, March 8, 2003, and continue
each Tuesday and Saturday throughout the year, except
during fair time. Admission to the
market is free
for buyers, as is parking.
The market will open at 5:00 a.m. to vendors
and buyers and will close at 5:00 p.m.
Open-air markets have been an institution
as early as 1477, when Cardinals and noblemen mingled
with fishmongers and foreigners during the medieval
and renaissance period. The tradition caught on and
open-air markets have become an ordinary part of the
American culture.
Joe Gomes has operated the Atwater Open-Air
Market since 1991.
On March 8, Gomes will launch “Joe’s
Open-Air Market at the Fairgrounds” in Turlock,
accompanied by more than 100 vendors. Vendors will
sell fresh produce, a variety of Mexican and American
music, men’s, women’s and children’s clothing
and footwear, new tools, automotive products,
previously owned items and more.
In addition, several concessionaires will sell
Mexican and American food, beverages and snacks.
One of the unique highlights of “Joe’s
Open-Air Market at the Fairgrounds” will be the “Used Vehicle Coral.” Sellers
of used vehicles (cars, trucks, boats, etc.) can
simply show up on market day to display their vehicle
for just a $5 fee. “Our coral
will provide sellers an inexpensive way to gain
exposure to hundreds and hundreds of potential
buyers,” Gomes said. “This is a valuable resource
as more and more we see cities limit parking of
personal vehicles for sale on streets.”
In addition, individuals
can host their own personal yard sale at the
market by purchasing a 20
x 30’ space for just $20.
“The yard-sale area provides individuals an
instant audience of buyers, as well as removes the
sale from their personal residence,” explained
Gomes.
“We are confident that the new open-air
market will be met with a great deal of enthusiasm,”
said Tony Leo, chief executive officer of the
Stanislaus County Fair.
“As our community has grown, so has the
demand for this style of buying and selling.”
“Joe’s Open-Air Market at
the Fairgrounds”
will be located in the west parking lot of the
Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, on Soderquist Road
between Fulkerth and Canal Drive. For more information, contact Joe Gomes at (209) 648-3248..
