Idol competition at Stanislaus County Fair

One lucky vocalist will be named the Stanislaus County Fair Idol and win a $1,000 grand prize at this summer’s fair.

For the first time ever, the Stanislaus County Fair will host the Stanislaus County Fair Idol Competition.  The competition will be held nightly during the fair’s 10-day run, July 25 through August 3, 2003.

Auditions for the competition are slated for Saturday, July 12, 2003.  Registration is from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m., with the first audition held promptly at 8:00 a.m. Only 100 contestants will have the opportunity to audition and try to secure one of 10 coveted finalists’ slots in the fair’s contest.

The 10 finalists and three runners-up will be announced on audition day at 6:00 p.m.

“Our fair’s mission is to promote agriculture, education, entertainment and technology,” said Pennie Rorex, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair.  “This competition provides a wonderful opportunity to promote entertainment and extend some well-deserved notoriety to 10 talented young adults.”

The Stanislaus County Fair Idol Competition, which is not affiliated with any other “Idol” or talent competition, invites vocalists who are 16 years of age, but not more than 24 years of age as of July 12, 2003, to attend the auditions.  Auditions will be held at the fairgrounds, located at 900 N. Broadway, in Turlock, in Exhibit Building #2.

Contestants must reside in the 38th District Agricultural Association, which includes all of Stanislaus County, and that portion of Merced County north of the Merced River, served by Turlock Irrigation District.

“Contestants, under the age of 18 on July 12, 2003, must be accompanied by an adult at the audition who must provide written consent for him/her to participate,” explained Rorex. “Unfortunately, a minor who does not have written consent from his/her parent, legal guardian or conservator will be ineligible for the audition.”

A random number distribution line control procedure will be used to eliminate “camping out” for a place in line, and to ensure that interested contestants have an equal chance at being the first in line. “Contestants in line between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. on July 12 will be given a ticket for a random number drawing to be held at 7:30 a.m. to see who will become the first person in line,” said Rorex. “Following the drawing of one ticket, those with higher numbers will follow behind in order of their number with the numbers lower than those selected following behind them.”

The auditions will be judged by a minimum of five judges, including one Fair official. Non-Fair judges will be individuals who are involved in the music industry in some manner.

The auditions will be a cappella and in front of a live audience. “Audience members are encouraged to observe and positively support all the audition contestants,” said Rorex.  Audience seating is subject to space availability.

Audition contestants will be scored on a scale of 1 to 100 in categories of musicianship, stage presence and overall entertainment value.

The 10 highest scoring contestants will become Stanislaus County Fair Idol finalists. In addition, the contestants scoring in the 11 th, 12 th and 13th places will be named “runners-up” and will be called on to fill vacancies that may arise by one or more of the 10 finalists being deemed ineligible or finding themselves unable to participate, provided the vacancy results prior to the commencement of the finals on July 25, 2003.

“Judging of the 10 finalists during the 10-days of competition will be done by members of the live audience—fair guests,” shared Rorex.  “Beginning 60 minutes before each night’s competition, we will distribute 500 official ballots.”

At the end of the evening’s competition, the 500 audience judges will cast their ballots.  “Results of the evening’s competition will be revealed at the beginning of the next night’s show,” explained Rorex.  “The lowest vote recipient will then be terminated from the competition.”

The competition will continue each night at the fair, eliminating one of the 10 contestants every night.  The final round will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 7:00 p.m.

“There are great prizes in store for the finalists and the winner,” said Rorex.  The 10 finalists will receive a professional make-over, complimentary Fair admission for all 10 nights for him/her and one guest, and a biographical feature in some of the fair-related publications.  .

In addition to the finalist prizes the Stanislaus County Fair Idol will receive a $1,000 cash award, five hours of studio recording time at MIP Productions in Turlock and a live radio performance of one vocal selection on a selected radio station following the competition.

Official rules will be available beginning June 12, 2003, online at www.stancofair.com.  The rules can also be picked up at the fair office at 900 N. Broadway, Turlock, CA, 95380, weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Stanislaus County Fair is now in its 92nd year.  The 2003 fair opens Friday, July 25 for a 10-day run.  The theme of this year’s fair is “The Place to be in 2003: Saluting the 30th Anniversary of American Graffiti.”

Last year, more than 226,000 family members enjoyed the fair —the largest attendance in the past decade.  In the fall of 2002, Modesto Bee readers voted the Stanislaus County Fair their “Favorite All-Around Event” in the Bee’s Readers’ Choice Awards!
