Atwater & Hilmar superintendents prepare for Stanislaus County Fair

Turlock—The Stanislaus County Fair opens in just six weeks and fair superintendents, including several Merced County residents, are hard at work creating yet another extraordinary fair.

Atwater’s Mark and Patty Anglin are busy in the livestock area.  Mark is the Stanislaus County Fair’s new livestock superintendent and Patty is the livestock secretary.  “The major activity for the past week has been receiving of 4-H, FFA and independent entries, which we estimate at around 1,300,” shared Mark Anglin

Mark Anglin reports that there are new capital improvements to the Stanislaus County Fair livestock area, including the construction of new restrooms and shower facilities, a new livestock office, a new wash rack for swine and a new fitting area for sheep.

Hilmar’s Iris Anderson, superintendent of the County Bank arts and crafts building, is bouncing back from a recent hip replacement operation.  Yet the surgery has not slowed this creative fair veteran down a bit.

Anderson has responded to last year’s frenzy over legos with a contest made just for those skilled in the stacking of the colorful blocks. Kids of all ages are welcome to enter the special Lego contest (open to the first 20 exhibitors).

Anderson is also preparing to deck out the arts and crafts building in 50’s style, keeping with this year’s fair theme—“The Place to be in 2003: Saluting the 30th Anniversary of American Graffiti.”

The arts and crafts building will be filled with 50’s nostalgia including pink and black fuzzy dice, rock and roll guitars and other tributes to the bee-boppin’ decade.

Hilmar’s Beth Smith cooks up fun and helps local talent shine as superintendent of the Save Mart Ag Hort/Home Arts Building. Smith’s building is the site of many tasty contests including the new All American Apple Pie Contest and the mouth watering BBQ Ribs contest.

Smith’s fair-preparation plate is already full. “I have already contacted some companies for new recipe pamphlets to have available for fairgoers,” said Smith. She is also training future fair staff as teenagers float in to help staff her office.

“I love having the kids work for me,” said Smith.

Harold Whaley, a Modesto resident, is cultivating good times in his role as superintendent of the Westurf Floriculture Building. As the superintendent, Whaley does a lot more than supervise; he recently helped his team plant 3,300 flowers plants to beautify the areas in and around the Westurf Floriculture Building. The newly planted blossoms include begonias, zinnias and salvias in a variety of colors.

Whaley shared that floriculture fans will have something new to marvel at the 2003 Stanislaus County Fair.  He and his staff have just installed a beautiful ornamental gazebo that will grace the garden area. “We have a lot to do but we are working in the mornings to beat the heat and things are progressing quickly,” said Whaley.

In addition to the Anglins, Anderson, Smith and Whaley, the 2003 fair superintendents include: Michael Brommer (rabbits), Anita Hill (4-H), Claudette Jiminez (Turlock Journal Photography Building), Phyllis Larrick (horses), Jeff Meyer (poultry) and Daniel Vannest (FFA ag mechanics).

“Our fair’s superintendents know how to put the ‘super’ in superintendent,” said Tony Leo, chief executive officer of the fair. “This impressive team of superintendents works long before the gates open on July 25 so that your family’s visit to the fair both fun and memorable.”

The Stanislaus County Fair is now in its 92nd year.  The 2003 fair opens Friday, July 25 for a 10-day run.  The theme of this year’s fair is “The Place to be in 2003: Saluting the 30th Anniversary of American Graffiti.”

Last year, more than 226,000 family members enjoyed the fair —the largest attendance in the past decade.  In the fall of 2002, Modesto Bee readers voted the Stanislaus County Fair their “Favorite All-Around Event” in the Bee’s Readers’ Choice Awards!

The mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a family and community oriented experience promoting agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.
