Stanislaus
County Fair to offer behind the scenes school tours!
Turlock—Pre-school
through sixth grade teachers and students are invited
to take part in school tours at the Stanislaus County
Fair and get a behind the scenes look at fair fun.
The tours,
now in their 14th year, were created to be
both exciting and educational and afford students a
guided trip around the fair absolutely free of charge.
“Students begin to understand the importance of
agriculture and the role it plays in their daily life
and teachers get the huge benefit of resources and
contacts to use in developing curriculum,” said
Stacy Crow, school tour coordinator.
There are
many exciting stops around the Stanislaus County Fair,
including an opportunity to view the schools
involvement poultry projects, crafts created by area
teachers and students. This contest is open until July
18th at 7 p.m. and allows teachers and
students to showcase their creativity by constructing
a pair of chickens to be judged on workmanship,
appearance and originality.
There are
still create-a-chicken kits left that may be claimed
be calling the fairgrounds at 668-1333 by any
interested teachers, grades pre-school through 6th
grade.
The next
featured point of interest on the fair tour is a
presentation from the Turlock Irrigation District on
the importance of water safety in the summer months.
Next up the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau will teach
students about the top 10 commodities grown in
Stanislaus County.
“Students
will be amazed at what we grow right in their
backyard,” said Crow.”
At the
next tour stop the Dairy Council of California will
teach students about the importance of balanced diets
and nutritional snacks.
Tourists
will also visit the 4-H Farmyard Experience. The area
features a petting zoo and activities to help students
understand various aspects of agriculture. This stop
of the tour will be run by 4-H students and is also
open during fair hours.
The tours run on Monday, July 28,
Wednesday, July 30, Thursday, July 31 and Friday
August 1. The first tour begins at 9:00 a.m. with
tours departing every 10 minutes thereafter,
concluding at 11:30 a.m. daily. Each tour lasts
approximately 90 minutes. Teachers who don’t want to
miss out on all the fun in store for their classes
should contact Stacy Crow at 668-1333 ext.330 for
their chance to be a part of school tours.
The
Stanislaus County Fair is now in its 92nd year. The 2003 fair opens
Friday, July 25 for a 10-day run.
The theme of this year’s fair is “The Place
to be in 2003: Saluting the 30th
Anniversary of American Graffiti.”
Last
year, more than 226,000 family members enjoyed the
fair —the largest attendance in the past decade.
In the fall of 2002, Modesto Bee readers voted
the Stanislaus County Fair their “Favorite
All-Around Event” in the Bee’s Readers’ Choice
Awards!
The
mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a
family and community oriented experience promoting
agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.
