Stanislaus County Fair concludes successful 10-day run

Turlock—Fair officials have a lot to smile about including sold-out celebrity concerts, great weather and the making of life-long fair time memories.

More than 225,000* guests visited the Stanislaus County Fair, which closed on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, after its annual 10-day run.

“It’s been a great fair,” said Tony Leo, chief executive officer of the Stanislaus County Fair.  “From the beautiful weather, to the sold-out Journey and Brad Paisley concerts, to the 30,000 individual exhibit entries, to the 1,100 pounds of cheese samples served, there’s been success in every venue of the 2004 Stanislaus County Fair.”

“Our fair board measures our success based on input from our guests. When our guests are happy we know we have put on a successful fair—and our guests were happy,” shared Leo.

The fair was filled with highlights, including the selection of the 2004 Stanislaus County Fair Idol—Jessica Banana of Turlock.

Also during the fair Malcom Eddy, an 83-year old Turlock resident, celebrated 25 years as a ticket seller for the fair.  And, Gary Peters, age 29 of Ceres, proposed marriage from the Food Maxx Arena track, just before he competed in a motocross event.

A bittersweet highlight of the 2004 fair was the sale of the late Ryan Taylor’s hog. Taylor, an 18-year old Modesto High School graduate and FFA member, was the victim of a motorcycle accident on July 12, 2004. Following Taylor’s death, his 9-year old brother Brent committed to show the hog Taylor was raising for the 2004 fair.

Based on merit alone, the Stanislaus County Fair’s swine judge selected Taylor’s hog the FFA Crossbreed champion at the Aug. 2 competition.**

At the Junior Livestock Auction, on Saturday August 7, Taylor’s 219-pound champion hog sold for $20.18 a pound.  After calculating “add-ons” (donations over the purchase price), the award-winning hog sold for $9719.42.  The entire amount will be donated to Modesto High School FFA and used for scholarships in Taylor’s memory.

Plans are already underway for the 2005 fair, which will open on Friday, July 29 and will run through Sunday, August 7, 2005.  The theme of the 2005 fair is “Tropical Nights and Midway Lights”

The mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a family and community oriented experience promoting agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.

*Actual attendance, 255,462.  Attendance results subject to final audit.

**Complete results of exhibitor and livestock judging will be available after auditing, on or after Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004.
