Stanislaus County Fair seeks connoisseurs
of homemade ice cream and BBQ ribs

Turlock--If your homemade ice cream recipe makes your family scream for more or your secret recipe for barbecue ribs is always in demand then savor this.  Your concoction could land you a cash prize in the Stanislaus County Fair’s special contests for homemade ice cream and barbecued ribs.

The barbecue ribs contest is open to contestants who are challenged to cook up their best pork or beef ribs using a favorite marinade, sauce or spice.  The contestant must provide six ribs for tasting by the judges and their recipe.

The rib contest will be judged before a live audience on Saturday, July 31, beginning at 6 p.m.  The public is invited to observe the judging, which will be held at the fair in the Save Mart Home Arts/Ag-Hort Building.

The ribs contest is sponsored by Beth Smith and Melinda Fannin, in memory of Bob Smith—who was a great barbecue rib chef.

The homemade ice cream contest is open to adults, who are required to bring one quart of his/her favorite homemade ice cream in a disposable container, along with the recipe.

The homemade ice cream contest will be judged before a live audience, on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m. The public is invited to observe the judging, which will be held at the fair in the Save Mart Home Arts/Ag-Hort Building.

The homemade ice cream contest is sponsored by D&E Jerseys & Avi-Lanche Jerseys of Hilmar.

There is no fee to enter either contest and recipes submitted are not published.

But hurry…the deadline to enter the contests is Tuesday, July 27.  Entry forms must be received by the fair’s Exhibits Office by 5 p.m. on that date.  Entry forms can be downloaded at www.stancofair.com (Exhibits link) and are also available at the fair office, located at 900 N. Broadway in Turlock. The Stanislaus County Fair is now in its 93rd year.  The 2004 fair opens Friday, July 30 for a 10-day run.  The theme of this year’s fair is “Say Cheese!”

Last year more than 225,000 people enjoyed the fair.  In 2002 and again in 2003, Modesto Bee readers voted the Stanislaus County Fair their “Favorite All-Around Event” in the Bee’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

The mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a family and community oriented experience promoting agriculture, entertainment and technology.  For more information about the Stanislaus County Fair log onto www.stancofair.com.
