Stanislaus County Fair to offer behind the scenes school tours!

Turlock—Kindergarten through sixth grade teachers and students are invited to take part in school tours at the Stanislaus County Fair and get a behind the scenes look at fair fun.

The tours, now in their 15th year, were created to be both exciting and educational and afford students a guided trip around the fair absolutely free of charge. “Students begin to understand the importance of agriculture and the role it plays in their daily life and teachers get the huge benefit of resources and contacts to use in developing curriculum,” said Stacy Crow, school tour coordinator.

Tours are sponsored by Stanislaus County Farm Bureau and feature many stops around the fairgrounds.  The first stop is to take a gander at the schools involvement dairy goat projects, which are created by local area teachers and students. This contest is open until July 23 at 7 p.m. and allows teachers and students to showcase their creativity by constructing a dairy goat to be judged on workmanship, appearance and originality.

There are still create-a-dairy goat kits available, but they must be claimed by July 1 at 5 p.m. in order to participate.  Interested teachers, grades kindergarten through sixth grade, may sign-up by calling the fairgrounds at 668-1333.

The next featured point of interest on the fair tour is a presentation from the Turlock Irrigation District on the importance of water safety in the summer months. At the next tour stop the dairy industry presents the importance of the dairy industry to people’s everyday life.

Tourists will also visit the 4-H Farmyard Experience. The area features a petting zoo and activities to help students understand various aspects of agriculture. This stop of the tour will be coordinated by 4-H students and is also open during fair hours.

The tours run on Monday, Aug. 2, Wednesday, Aug. 4, Thursday, Aug. 5 and Friday August 6. The first tour begins at 8:30 a.m. with tours departing every 30 minutes thereafter, concluding at 12 p.m. daily. Each tour lasts approximately 2 hours.

Tours are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and should be booked early by phoning Stacy Crow at  668-1333 ext.330.

For children unable to participate in school tours, Kids’ Night at the Fair is planned for Thursday, Aug. 5, On Kids’ Night children 12 and under are admitted free, compliments of California Dairies, Inc.  A special parade of mascots will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Kids’ Night.

The Stanislaus County Fair is now in its 93rd year.  The 2004 fair opens Friday, July 30 for a 10-day run.  The theme of this year’s fair is “Say Cheese!”

Last year more than 225,000 people enjoyed the fair.  In 2002 and again in 2003, Modesto Bee readers voted the Stanislaus County Fair their “Favorite All-Around Event” in the Bee’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

The mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a family and community oriented experience promoting agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.  For more information about the Stanislaus County Fair log onto www.stancofair.com.
