Calling all cars for Metal Mayhem

Turlock – Drivers who want to venture onto the crash course at the Stanislaus County Fair’s Destruction Derby II are encouraged to register now for the metal crunching.

For the second consecutive year the Stanislaus County Fair and the Turlock Lions Club will present two nights of Destruction Derby fun, during the Fair’s 10-day run.  There are still driver positions open in each of the four heats for Destruction Derby II – Metal Mayhem, which is slated for Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.  There is no residency restriction for Metal Mayhem so drivers from all over California are encouraged to participate.

Destruction Derby I – Traditional Turmoil will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.  Heats are filled for Derby I.

Sponsored by the Turlock Lions Club, the Destruction Derby (D-Derby) has been an ever-popular event at the Stanislaus County Fair for 30 years.  “The traditional D-Derby is so popular that reserved seating tickets for the derby sold out in less than one hour in 2003 and in just 20 minutes in 2004,” said Pennie Rorex, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair.

“Two nights of D-Derby make it possible for more fair patrons and more drivers to enjoy the metal smashing fun!”

D-Derby II – Metal Mayhem is back for the second year.  Metal Mayhem features four heats.  Heats planned for D-Derby II – Metal Mayhem, subject to minimum participation are:

§         Compact Cars: Domestic and imports under a 102” wheel base

§         Late Models: American-made, full sized cars made after 1980

§         Powder Puff: Women drivers only – any year and size car (except compacts)

§         60’s and 70’s Cars:  Large, strong cars, not compacts, not used cars and not softer model cars; this is not a women’s or men’s only heat, either can enter.

§         Last Chance: An opportunity for previous years’ Turlock Lions derby survivor vehicles and for the survivors of the 2004 D-Derby I and 2004 D-Derby II.

“The Turlock Lions Club is calling all cars and all drivers,” said Carl Mikkelsen, Turlock Lions derby coordinator.  “A full plate of destruction is planned for everyone who has a thirst for the mud flinging, exhaust billowing, metal crunching fun of the derby!”

Drivers interested in participating in D-Derby II – Metal Mayhem should contact Mikkelsen at (209) 667-5452 (evenings) or e-mail lionsderby@sbcglobal.net.
