POULTRY INDUSTRY LEADER APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF FAIR BOARD

Turlock – After leading the Stanislaus County Fair board for the past year, Dale Butler will turn over the gavel to incoming president Bill Mattos at the October fair board meeting.

On Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, the gavel was officially passed to Bill Mattos, ending a one-year term as board president for Dale Butler.  “What a fantastic year,” Butler said.  “We have accomplished wonderful things this year and I have no doubt that the same will ring true for Bill.”

Mattos is the president of the California Poultry Federation where he works with agricultural and business groups to promote business and industry in California.  He is also president and publisher of Mattos Newspapers, a newspaper and printing company headquartered in Newman.

In addition to these positions, Mattos is also the vice chairman of the board of governors at Doctor’s Medical Center; vice president of the Stanislaus State University Foundation board; member of the dean’s advisory board of the School of Agriculture at the University of California, Davis; secretary of the Stanislaus Area Friends of Extension; former president of the Newman Rotary and the Newman Chamber of Commerce; and former California chairman of the National Newspaper Association.

Mattos lives in Newman and is the father of two daughters, Toni and Natalie.

“The board has grown into a strong and impressive team under the leadership of President Butler,” said Tony Leo, chief executive officer of the Stanislaus County Fair.  “At the same time, we have greatly benefited from the numerous contributions Director Mattos has brought to the board.  His commitment to the Stanislaus County Fair, will make him and excellent board president.”

Serving with Mattos is Linda Weidman, who was elected vice president of the Stanislaus County Fair Board.  Weidman is retired from the County of Stanislaus where she worked as the supervising criminal investigator for the Stanislaus County District Attorney's office.  She was first appointed to the Stanislaus County Fair Board in September of 2001.

The Stanislaus County Fair just celebrated its 93rd year.  The 2005 fair opens Friday, July 29 for a 10-day run.  The theme of next year’s fair is “Tropical Nights and Midway Lights”

This year more than 225,000 people enjoyed the fair.  In 2002 and again in 2003, Modesto Bee readers voted the Stanislaus County Fair their “Favorite All-Around Event” in the Bee’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

The mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a family and community oriented experience promoting agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.  For more information about the Stanislaus County Fair log onto www.stancofair.com.
