INDUSTRY LEADER APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF FAIR BOARD
Turlock
– After leading the Stanislaus County Fair board for
the past year, Dale Butler will turn over the gavel to
incoming president Bill Mattos at the October fair
board meeting.
On
Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, the gavel was officially passed
to Bill Mattos, ending a one-year term as board
president for Dale Butler.
“What a fantastic year,” Butler said.
“We have accomplished wonderful things this
year and I have no doubt that the same will ring true
for Bill.”
Mattos
is the president of the California Poultry Federation
where he works with agricultural and business groups
to promote business and industry in California.
He is also president and publisher of Mattos
Newspapers, a newspaper and printing company
headquartered in Newman.
In
addition to these positions, Mattos is also the vice
chairman of the board of governors at Doctor’s
Medical Center; vice president of the Stanislaus State
University Foundation board; member of the dean’s
advisory board of the School of Agriculture at the
University of California, Davis; secretary of the
Stanislaus Area Friends of Extension; former president
of the Newman Rotary and the Newman Chamber of
Commerce; and former California chairman of the
National Newspaper Association.
Mattos
lives in Newman and is the father of two daughters,
Toni and Natalie.
“The
board has grown into a strong and impressive team
under the leadership of President Butler,” said Tony
Leo, chief executive officer of the Stanislaus County
Fair. “At
the same time, we have greatly benefited from the
numerous contributions Director Mattos has brought to
the board. His
commitment to
the Stanislaus County Fair, will make him and
excellent board president.”
Serving
with Mattos is Linda Weidman, who was elected vice
president of the Stanislaus County Fair Board.
Weidman is retired from the County of
Stanislaus where she worked as the supervising criminal investigator for the
Stanislaus County District Attorney's office.
She was first appointed to the Stanislaus County Fair
Board in September of 2001.
The
Stanislaus County Fair just celebrated its 93rd
year. The
2005 fair opens Friday, July 29 for a 10-day run.
The theme of next year’s fair is “Tropical
Nights and Midway Lights”
This
year more than 225,000 people enjoyed the fair.
In 2002 and again in 2003, Modesto Bee
readers voted the Stanislaus County Fair their
“Favorite All-Around Event” in the Bee’s
Reader’s Choice Awards.
The
mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a
family and community oriented experience promoting
agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.
