TROPICAL NIGHTS AND MIDWAY LIGHTS HIGHLIGHT COUNTY FAIR

Christy Riley, 2005 Stanislaus County Fair Idol, celebrates
the announcement of her victory at the Idol competition
results show on closing night of the Stanislaus County Far.

Turlock—While the daily temperatures soared well above the average temperatures for the Central Valley during fair time, there was nothing “average” about the 2005 Stanislaus County Fair.

Joseph Amaral’s reserve supreme champion steer sold for $19,500 at the fair’s Junior Livestock Auction—$10,000 more than the Supreme Champion steer. A bride and groom tied the knot in the fair’s Kiwanis Beer Booth—the place they met 8 years ago.  And, now-retired Sheriff Les Weidman bid farewell on horseback to friends, families and supporters that packed the grandstands at the Stanislaus County Fair’s annual CCPRA rodeo.

The 94th Stanislaus County Fair concluded its 10-day run on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005.  “It was truly a great fair,” said Tony Leo, chief executive officer at the Stanislaus County Fair. “While the record-breaking heat kept some people cocooned in their air-conditioned homes, thousands* of others turned out for the great entertainment on our seven stages, to experience the excitement of the 37 rides in the midway, to cast their votes for the 2005 Stanislaus County Fair Idol and explore the 30,000 exhibits on display.”

“When we selected the 2005 fair theme three years ago, we had no idea how literal the theme would become. Our theme this year was ‘Tropical Nights and Midway Lights’ and the record-breaking temperatures certainly supported our theme.  Six out of 10 days we experienced temperatures over 100 degrees.”

On Sunday evening, after 9 nights of competition, 22-year-old Christy Riley of Oakdale was named the 2005 Stanislaus County Fair Idol. Carley Burch, age 17 of Hilmar, was named 1st runner up in the competition of vocalists.

Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H exhibitors sold more than 530 animals at the Stanislaus County Fair’s 41st Annual Junior Livestock Auction on Saturday, Aug. 6.  Seventeen rabbits, 54 steer, 248 swine, 158 sheep and 57 goats, resulted in total auction sales of $494,735.

FFA and 4-H exhibitors also sold 91 heifers at the 38th Annual Replacement Heifer Sale, on Friday, Aug. 5, 2005.  Heifer sales totaled $293,525.

The FoodMaxx Arena was filled with excitement during the fair’s 10-day run, too.  Sold-out crowds packed the Arena for the fair’s two destruction derbies, the truck and tractor pulls and the annual motocross competition.  In addition, thousands of music lovers attended the Hoobastank, John Fogerty and Lonestar concerts.

“Our fair is known for including high-caliber celebrity concerts with the price of fair admission and this year’s fair was no different,” said Leo.  “Standing-room only crowds turned out for the concerts on our Budweiser Variety Free Stage, including Aaron Tippin, Dierks Bentley, WAR, Righteous Brother Bill Medley, Terri Clark and El Coyote.”

The Stanislaus County Fair just concluded its 94th fair. The 2006 fair will open on Friday, July 28 for a 10-day run.  The theme of the 2006 fair will be “Pig Out on Family Fun!”

The mission of the Stanislaus County Fair is to provide a family and community oriented experience promoting agriculture, entertainment and technology.  For more information about the Stanislaus County Fair log onto www.stancofair.com.
